ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ7) Carilion Clinic will use a new method to help with early detection of addictions.

For the past three years, Carilion Clinic resident physicians across six departments were trained in S-BIRT. S-BRIT a nationally recognized screening method that allows for the early identification of problematic substance abuse behaviors. The method allows for care providers to screen their patients by asking only a few simple questions.

"It's hard to be effective at treating any kind of medical disease if somebody is engaging in problematic substance abuse," said Cheri Hartman, Administrator of the Office Space Opioid Treatment Program and Grant Project Director.

According to Hartman, early intervention is crucial in the prevention of substance abuse disorders.
