ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ7) Today marks the beginning of the 40-day Lenten season for Catholics, and masses at St. Andrew's church in Roanoke are being held to mark Ash Wednesday.
Worshippers get their foreheads actually marked with ashes today. And church leaders say, even though today is also Valentine's Day, Catholics should follow the tradition of no meat.
"It's a day of fasting, so with fasting we would have one meal and two smaller opportunities to eat that wouldn't add up to a meal. So yes, it's an unusual thing, as you mentioned it hasn't happened since 1945 that Ash Wednesday and St. Valentine’s Day fall on the same day," said Fr. Kevin Segerblom, of St. Andrew’s Catholic Church.
They're holding another mass tonight at 7 p.m. at St. Andrews. The Lenten season ends with Easter Sunday on April 1st.
