Celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ7) Several events celebrating and honoring Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. are being held on Monday January 15.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is present at the Civil Rights March in Washington D.C. on August 28, 1963.

In Lexington, the second annual Community Anti-Racism Effort (CARE) Rockbridge parade is happening. The parade starts at 10 a.m. at Randolph Street United Methodist Church.

In Roanoke, the local chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLS is hosting its 23d annual Martin Luther King Youth Day March and Service. The group will meet at the Dr. King statue at 12:30 p.m. and the walk will begin at 2 p.m. The service will start at 3 p.m. at Saint Paul's United Methodist Church. Youth in the Roanoke area will be honored for their scholastic achievements.

In Lynchburg, The Lighthouse Community Center and Churches United for Service will hold its first annual Martin Luther King Birthday Commemoration. It will take place at Virginia University of Lynchburg in the Humbles Hall Multi-purpose room. The event begins at 4 p.m.

In Danville, Averett University teaming up with God's Storehouse community service project from 9:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. The University is also hosting an MLK open mic night from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the student center.
