CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. (WDBJ7) The American Heart Association awarded the Christiansburg Rescue Squad with one of its highest honors.
The department received the association's Mission:Lifeline EMS Recognition Gold Plus award for its pre-hospital emergency care.
EMT's were awarded for their quick response time and ability to prep heart attack patients for surgery before they even arrive to the hospital.
"It's good. It shows that we're doing what we're supposed to do, getting the patients to the Cath Lab like they need to," said Deputy Chief Dustin Williams, with the Christiansburg Rescue Squad.
Last year the department helped about 17 patients with this care. They urge people who have had a heart attack not to drive them self to the hospital.
