Christiansburg Rescue chief’s car hit on Interstate 81, 1 of several crashes that day

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. (WDBJ7) The Christiansburg Rescue chief’s car was hit while in heavy traffic on Interstate 81 Thursday.

Chief Joe Coyle was driving a Rescue SUV around 4:15 p.m. near mile marker 114 when a sedan behind him was rear-ended by a tractor-trailer. Coyle’s SUV and the sedan were then hit by a second tractor-trailer.

Coyle and his nephew, a volunteer Christiansburg Rescue Squad member, were in the SUV but weren’t injured. The passengers in the sedan were taken to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries. The drivers of the tractor-trailers weren’t hurt but were taken to the hospital for evaluation.

Many local emergency agencies responded to multiple crashes on I-81 North and South Thursday.
