Christiansburg camp helps kids find confidence

BLACKSBURG, Va. (WDBJ7) Kids in Montgomery County are learning about the world around them during summer break.

This week Montgomery County schools teamed with Christiansburg Parks and Rec for Jill's Buddy Camp.

Wednesday kids tried their luck at putt-putt at Cox's Driving Range in Blacksburg.

The camp pairs a teenage buddy with a child who has developmental delays.

Some of the buddies say the camp gives them experience for their future careers.
Mackenzie Graham/North Cross School Graduate: "I enjoy working with kids and when I go into nursing school next year I want to work with kids. I've always loved being around kids," said Mackenzie Graham, a recent graduate of North Cross School. "Some of the kids don't get to get out very often so this is a time for them to play and hang out with their friends."

The camp is paid for through private donations and money raised by the Parks and Rec department.

It's named for a former helper who drowned in 2012.
