Christiansburg cancels trip to Ark Encounter after backlash from Freedom From Religion group

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. (WDBJ7) The Christiansburg Recreation Center canceled its trip to Kentucky after a national organization said it was unconstitutional.

A senior group at the recreation center had planned a trip to the Ark Encounter and Creation Museum in April. The Winconsin-based Freedom From Religion Foundation got a complaint and sent a letter to the town asking the trip to be canceled, telling the town that governments shouldn't hold events that benefit religious organizations.

"It's a problem because the government was organizing the trip and because the park has an explicit goal of working to convert people to Ken Ham's particular brand of Christianity," said Andrew Seidel, an attorney with the Freedom From Religion Foundation, during a phone interview.

The town says it also made the decision to cancel because not enough people signed up for the trip. Those who were signed up made arrangements to go with a non-government organization.
