CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. (WDBJ7) About 150 Pit Bulls are housed in New River Valley animal shelters, according to the assistant director of Mountain View Humane in Christiansburg.
Most of the dogs are euthanized because of low adoption rates.
To prevent more unwanted Pit Bulls from going to shelters, the spay and neuter clinic is offering $20 surgeries for any Pit or Pit mix from Montgomery, Floyd, Pulaski, and Giles Counties, and the City of Radford.
"Unfortunately a lot of Pit Bulls are not raised properly. They are bred to fight, they are the number one fighting dogs. We want to stop that cycle by spaying and neutering specifically Pit Bulls," said Corrie Prater, the assistant director of Mountain Valley Humane.
Funding to help lower the costs of the surgeries is coming from the Tulip Fund, named after a Pitt Bull that was rescued after being mistreated and later died.
