Christiansburg crews respond to fire, officer saves man and four dogs

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. (WDBJ)- The Christiansburg Police Department responded to a house fire at the 100 block of Hill Street around 1 p.m. Sunday.

Capt. Doug Weddle was first on the scene. Upon arrival, he entered the house to check for occupants. He found one man sleeping inside and also four dogs.

After exiting the residence Weddle was overcome by smoke and transported by police vehicle to a nearby hospital and treated for smoke inhalation.

Christiansburg Fire Department crews were on the scene throughout the afternoon.

The home was considered a complete loss.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
