Christiansburg man honored by police for wearing seat belt

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. (WDBJ7) A seat belt saved the life of a Christiansburg man and now he's urging other drivers to buckle up.

Andy Eames Aims told us he was on his way home from church in December when he passed out while he was driving and crashed into a pole.

Monday the police department awarded him the Saved By The Belt Award from the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police for wearing his seat belt.

"If you lose consciousness you have not control over your body at all. And you're just at the mercy of what you hit or how fast you're going. I would have gone through the windshield had I not had it on because I could not brace myself. I did not know this was happening," Eames said.

He says he continues to wear his seat belt where ever he goes.
