CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. (WDBJ7) In Christiansburg, fifth graders got a chance to sit in the mayor's seat and make big decisions.

Falling Branch Elementary School held a mock town council meeting Thursday afternoon. Students played and dressed the part of council members, town leaders, and citizens taking a stand.

Many were eager to learn how their local government works.

"We are the future of this community and we need to know how it's being run so that way we can give our opinion and help our community," said Ariya Patel, a fifth grade student.

"One day you might go up there and you need to know what's going on and be respectful and serious," said Ryan Spencer, another fifth grade student.

Christiansburg's mayor helped lead the program and later answered questions. This is part of Local Government Education Week.
