CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. (WDBJ7) A store in Christiansburg holds the secret to staying open for decades.

The Western Store is celebrating more than 50 years in business. Owner Sue Atkinson first opened the store on her family farm selling jeans to cowboys.

The store became so popular it moved it to downtown Christiansburg in the 1960's.

At 82 she says having good health, good customer relations, and prayer have kept her doors open.

"You've got to offer the customers a lot of merchandise to get them to drive 100 miles to shop from you. And some people do. They can drive here knowing that when they get here, they're going to get a good selection," Atkinson said.

Atkinson is still selling jeans, but has added cowboy hats, western shirts, boots, and saddles to her inventory.

The store has been at its current location on North Franklin Street for about 25 years.
