City of Lynchburg issues State of Emergency

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WDBJ7) -- The City of Lynchburg has issued a State of Emergency, effective at 9:23 p.m. due to hazardous conditions.

City officials say the emergency alert is in effect until further notice. Officials are asking motorists to stay off of the roadways to allow police, fire and public works crews to respond to problem areas throughout the city.

For anyone seeking shelter, the Thomas Road Baptist Church and Lynchburg Chapter of the Red Cross has opened a shelter at the church's location at 701 Mountain View Road.

As a reminder, Lynchburg City Schools are closed on Monday, April 16.
