LYNCHBURG, Va. (WDBJ7) A new air traffic control tower is taking shape at the Lynchburg Regional Airport.

Work is underway to replace the old tower, built in 1963, with a new structure that's taller and more functional.

Crews have "topped out" the building with a steel cab that will house air traffic equipment and staff.

The new tower should be fully operational by next spring.
