UPDATE: Man killed in fatal Franklin County crash identified

FRANKLIN COUNTY (WDBJ7) -- UPDATE: 3:10 p.m.

Virginia State Police have identified a driver killed in a fatal Franklin County crash as John Bates of Callaway.

Authorities say Bates was driving a truck down Route 40, less than a mile from Colonial Turnpike, when the truck crossed the center line and hit another pickup truck.

Bates was wearing a seatbelt.

The driver of the other truck, Ronald Clock of Rocky Mount was flown to the hospital. A passenger in his truck was also seriously hurt.

The crash is still being investigated.

UPDATE:

State Police have confirmed a head-on fatal crash in Franklin County.

Authorities say one person is dead and at least two have been taken to the hospital.

Preliminary investigation suggests that speed was not a factor, according to police.

Crews are on the scene of a vehicle crash on VA-40E near Colonial Turnpike in Franklin County.

VDOT says both lanes are closed. There are detours in place, but drivers should expect delays.
