Crews respond to oil spill in Campbell County pond

CAMPBELL COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ7) -- Around 4:47 p.m. Friday, Campbell County Public Safety Communications Center received a call about a large amount of oil on a pond off of Camphydaway Road.

Rustburg Fire Department, Concord Fire Department and the Campbell County Fire Marshal responded

Once on the scene, units began to contain the oil and stop the spread.

The source of the oil was identified as a leaking home-heating oil tank, located upstream from the pond.

Due to the oil being in a waterway/pond, additional resources from Evington Fire Department, Virginia Department of Emergency Management Haz Mat, the Department of Environmental Quality and a private clean-up contractor assisted.

There is no danger to the public at this time and it appears no oil has spread past the pond.
