DANVILLE, Va. (WDBJ7) In Danville, the fire department responded to a record number of calls in 2016.
The department received 8,228 calls last year. That number is up 3.8% from 2015.
Not all of the calls were for fires.
According to the department, 69% of the calls were for medical emergencies.
They say many of their calls are also when people smell odors or gas and are trying to prevent an emergency.
"We don't want to discourage anyone from calling, but we would like for them to think about what they have going on," says Danville Assistant Fire Chief, Steve Dishman.
Last year saw a decrease in structure fires, with 27 working fires in 2016 compared to 42 in 2015.
