Danville Fire sees an increase in 911 calls

DANVILLE, Va. (WDBJ7) The Danville Fire Department is seeing an increase in calls coming into its dispatch center this year.

The department is nearly 300 calls ahead of last year.

The fire chief says a few different factors play a role.

That includes a higher elderly population and low socio-economic status. Those groups have a greater need than others.

"If you don't know, it's better to call, by any means, so we don't tell people don't call us for this, but it's call if you have a need," says Danville Fire Chief, Steve Dishman.

Chief Dishman says the majority of the department's calls are medical calls.
