DANVILLE, Va. (WDBJ7) The Danville Area Humane Society is offering a $1,000 reward for tips that lead to the arrest of a person who threw two cats from the window of a moving truck, killing one of the animals.

The incident happened around 10 Tuesday morning on U.S. Route 58 west in Pittsylvania County, according to a statement from the humane society.

A passerby from Charlotte Court House stopped to assist the animals, but was unable to prevent another driver from hitting and killing one of the cats.

The surviving cat, a male gray tabby kitten, was taken to the Danville Area Humane Society for treatment and shelter.

"Abandonment is against the law!" read a statement on the humane society's Facebook page Tuesday afternoon. "We will do everything in our power to investigate and file charges against the person who did this."

Leaders of the humane society believe the cats were thrown from an early 2000's model blue Ford F-150, with a Virginia Tech Hokie decal on the back glass. The first two letters of the license plate may be "JC."

Anyone with information should call the Danville Area Humane Society at (434) 799-0843.
