DANVILLE, Va. (WDBJ7) Residents in Danville had the opportunity to take a walk with the mayor to encourage more people to utilize the parks and trails.

They walked from the Crossing at the Dan to Main Street Plaza.

Danville Parks and Recreation has been working hard to extend the existing Riverwalk Trail further, and updating local parks.

Mayor Gilstrap says studies show that high-quality parks are important to the health of the whole community.

"The goal is, of course, that everyone live within a 10 minute walk and that's what we're emphasizing today is that we want everybody to live within a 10 minute walk and do that for your health. It's important," says Mayor Gilstrap.

Mayor John Gilstrap joins more than 130 mayors across the country supporting the 10-Minute Walk Campaign led by The Trust for Public Land in partnership with National Recreation and Park Association and Urban Land Institute.
