DANVILLE, Va. (WDBJ7) The Danville Parks and Recreation Department is helping fourth graders prepare for the SOL test, with the help of twin otters.
The department created a book about two otters who live in the Dan River.
With the help of area teachers, the book fits into the fourth grade curriculum.
It also lets students be creative, because it's open-ended.
"We're hoping that this book will really be that change piece, that 10-15 years down the road people will really start thinking differently and start creating some stewards in our community because we're lacking people who are big supporters of the river as a whole," says Jason Bookheimer of Danville Parks and Recreation.
The goal of the project is to help children understand the importance of the river.
It's available for purchase at the Danville Welcome Center, or it can be downloaded.
