Danville discusses riverbank filtration for second drinking water source

DANVILLE, Va. (WDBJ7) Danville is looking to install a riverbank filtration system for a second drinking water source.

Danville Utilities wants to perform geophysical surveys at 10 different sites along the Dan River.

The surveys would determine if the system would be feasible.

Danville is examining the option because with potential contamination issues, they say a riverbank water source would provide more consistent water characteristics.

The surveys won't be detrimental to the property.

"It might be good recreational activities or something, hiking trails or something, but what we would do would not limit any kind of development, so to speak, of that property," says Water Treatment Plant Manager, Alan Johnson.

The city hopes to have a decision made by October.
