DANVILLE, Va. (WDBJ7) Runners, walkers and bikers in Danville will soon have more mileage to cover on the River Walk Trail.
Crews are working along Trade Street to finish the newest portion of the trail.
The new area will connect the Robertson Bridge to behind the Dan River Church.
The trail will be built in three sections and should be finished by late summer or early fall.
Danville Parks and Recreation leaders say the goal is to make the city more pedestrian friendly.
"This is a large section that we are really excited about. It will make a pretty large loop. Feasibly, if you get on it and you take the bike lanes on West Main you can make a huge loop through the city," Danville Parks and Recreation's Communications Specialist Russell Carter said.
With this new addition, the trail will stretch from Ballou Park to Anglers Park.
Leader say it was a collaborative effort to get this project off the ground.
It was funded through VDOT, Duke Energy, multiple grants and a city grant match.
New maps will soon be available.
