DANVILLE, Va. (WDBJ7) Small businesses in Danville are being targeted by a payment scam, according to the Danville Utilities Department.
Danville Utilities wants its customers to be aware of a scam affecting businesses in Danville. In the scam, businesses get a phone call from a person pretending to be with Danville Utilities. The person threatens to disconnect utility service if the business doesn’t make payments through the purchase of a pre-paid card.
According to Danville Utilities Director Jason Grey, the department has been contacted by six businesses who were targeted in this scam.
Danville Utilities doesn’t call customers and demand payments. It sends notifications by letter over several weeks, never just a single notification before disconnection.
If you get a call from someone you don’t know who urges you to make a payment to Danville Utilities, write down the phone number and hang up. You can check the legitimacy of the call by contacting Central Collections at 434-799-5125 or by visiting the Charles H. Harris Financial Service Center located at 311 Memorial Drive.
