DANVILLE, Va. (WDBJ7) A Danville man is being honored by France for his service during World War II.

Jim Lynch served in the United States Army from 1943 to 1945.

Last week at the French Embassy, he was given a medal, awarding him with honorary knighthood in the Legion of Honor.

Lynch says it was a long time coming.

Lynch lost his brother during the war and has bittersweet memories of his time in France.

"And we mounted up on our armored vehicles and went around on the left side. We didn't go right into Paris," Lynch said. "I think it's a pretty medal, I really do."

Lynch will be 93 in May.

He was one of 16 veterans honored in the United States, including veteran George Hundley from Martinsville.
