CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. (WDBJ7) A death investigation is underway in Christiansburg.
Officers responded to Ponderosa Drive on Monday after someone reported a man acting strangely.
Police learned Leonard Karr had an outstanding warrant in Montgomery County.
Investigators say they arrested him without using force.
Police later noticed Karr in distress while in the back of the police car, and called 911.
He went to the hospital, where he died Monday night.

Christiansburg Police officers responded at 12:36 p.m. on Monday to the Microtel Inn & Suites in the 100 block of Ponderosa Drive in reference to a report of a white male with long, gray hair who was standing in front of the hotel and acting strangely.
Upon arrival, officers made contact with a male subject, identified to be Leonard Jay Karr. While speaking to him, they discovered he had an outstanding warrant from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office related to an alleged probation violation. The officers arrested the man – placing him in handcuffs – without incident. No use of force was applied during the arrest.
The man was transported to the magistrate’s office on North Franklin Street in Christiansburg. Upon arrival, around 12:53 p.m., the officer attempted to remove the man from the police vehicle and noticed he appeared to be in distress. Officers on scene called 911, and when rescue personnel arrived, the man was unresponsive. The first responders on scene were able to revive the man and transport him to LewisGale Hospital Montgomery, where he died this evening. The man’s cause of death was not immediately clear.
Preliminary information indicates Karr, 59, was residing at the Microtel Inn & Suites.
The Christiansburg Police Department immediately alerted Virginia State Police, and that agency will be conducting an investigation, per standard protocol.
