Dirty Dancing in the street at Lyric Theatre to celebrate film's 30th year Saturday

BLACKSBURG, Va. (WDBJ7) A big party is set for Saturday night, July 15, celebrating an iconic movie filmed in the New River Valley.

It's being called Dirty Dancing in the Street.

The 30 year old movie was partly filmed at Mountain Lake Lodge in Giles County. But The Lyric Theatre in Downtown Blacksburg also has a strong tie to the film.

Theatre Executive Director Susan Mattingly said. "They did a premiere at The Lyric when the film was first released. So all those people who had been in the film as extras or worked up there got to come down and see the film before it was released to the general public."

One of the people up at Mountain Lake in 1986 during filming was Richard Goff, an extra who said he can't wait to be at the celebration Saturday.

"I was so excited the first night of the premiere 30 years ago, and to see it on The Lyric big screen again is going to be awesome," Goff said.

Goff won't be the only extra at the celebration. Plenty of local residents were in the backgrounds of those scenes.

Mattingly explained, "We had a special campaign to reach out to people who had been involved in the movie, and they're going to have special name tags, and we did a casting call."

After the movie screening Saturday, fans will take to the street.

College Avenue will be completely closed off as a local band and professional dancers will take to the street with everyone to have a Dirty Dancing Era dance party.

It's something that's not uncommon in Blacksburg.

Downtown Blacksburg, Inc. Director Laureen Blakemore said, "For our other festivals, Steppin' Out and Summer Solstice Fest, there's a lot of dancing in the streets too. But this is just a special, different kind of atmosphere and it's going to be a lot of fun."

The movie screening is at 7:00 Saturday evening and people are expected to hit College Avenue right around 9:00.

Tickets to the movie were available online Friday, and as long as they don't sell out, they'll be available at the ticket office Saturday too.

The dancing in the street is open to anyone who wants to take part.
