LYNCHBURG, Va. (WDBJ7) -- After six decades, a performing arts venue is one step closer to reopening.
After the 18-month renovation phase, the historic Academy Theatre in downtown started taking down the outside Scaffolding Tuesday.
The newly renovated front façade cost around $22 million to complete.
Through scientific analysis, the building’s architects were able to determine the original colors when it was rebuilt following a fire in 1912. “So when the microscope revealed that it was these colors, it took a lot of people aback, but everyone adjusted and it’s a very handsome and sophisticated Italian-aged Mozart paint scheme," explained architect Amanda Adams.
A new lobby for the theater is also in the works.
Both the renovated venue and lobby are set to open at the end of the year.
