Emergency crews respond to crash near Smith Mountain Lake airport

MONETA, Va. (WDBJ7) UPDATE:

According to police, the North America T-6 in the 1000 block of Cutlass Road in Moneta around 4:40 p.m. The pilot, Daniel Haug, of Culpeper, was attempting to land the aircraft on the runway when he ran off the right side and struck some trees.

No injuries were reported.

No one was injured when a historic plane crashed near the Smith Mountain Lake airport Thursday afternoon.

911 dispatchers were contacted around 4:45 Thursday afternoon regarding a possible plane crash with smoke showing on Buccaneer Road near the end of the Smith Mountain Lake airport's runway.

Emergency crews on scene say a historic, World War II-era T-6 airplane ran off the runway. The plane was damaged. The only person inside was the plane's owner, who was not injured.
