(WDBJ7) It’s a new day for students in Lexington, Buena Vista, and Rockbridge County. The cars came rolling in to school across that area Monday morning for the start of the school year.

At Lexington City schools, parents started early, bringing kids to teachers. Officials there are looking forward to a new year.

“There’s a lot of new initiatives that we’re focusing on this year as a division," said Scott Jefferies, Lexington City Schools superintendent. "When it comes to our differentiation, when it comes to our focus on literacy, K through 8. But obviously the big news is the opening of Waddell.”

The new Harrington Waddell Elementary is nearing completion. School officials expect to move students into the building on Labor Day weekend. Until then, they continue to share facilities with the Lexington middle school students.
