UPDATE: Armed robbery prompts brief lockdown at five Bedford County schools

FOREST, Va. (WDBJ7) Five schools were briefly placed on lock down in the Forest area Wednesday afternoon, according to a spokesperson for Bedford County Public Schools.

The lockdowns were lifted around 2:20 Wednesday afternoon, according to public relations coordinator Ryan Edwards.

The lockdowns were advised by law enforcement after they received a report about an armed robbery.

The Bedford County Sheriff's Office said someone in the West Crossing neighborhood called 911 around 1:30 Wednesday afternoon, saying two black males wearing ski masks entered their home armed with a handgun.

The caller said a safe was removed from their home and that the robbers fled in a grey SUV. The caller said one of the robbers was wearing a yellow jacket, while the other was wearing a grey jacket.

The five schools that were placed on lockdown include:

- Jefferson Forest High School
- Forest Middle School
- Forest Elementary School
- Thomas Jefferson Elementary School
- New London Academy
