ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ7) Keoshia Smith was about five months from graduation when ITT Tech closed in December 2016. She wasn't sure what to do in the days after their sudden shuttering, but she decided to start again with ECPI.
"We were talking about graduation, and then the school closed," Smith said. "At that point, I wanted to give up. I felt like giving up. It was probably one of the most difficult things that I have been through. But I had my daughter there. And with her there, there was no other option than for me to finish what I started."
Ten of the former ITT nursing school students graduated in a Friday afternoon ceremony, standing with their new school ECPI.
"I did not look at them any different than any of our students to come through the doors," Director of Nursing Jennifer Barger said. "They were ECP I students, and we welcomed them. We were very happy to have them."
Smith graduated with her friends and family cheering her on, having already accepted a job at Lewis Gale.
"It feels amazing," Smith said. "There was a time when I didn't know if this was going to happen. And for me to be here today and in front of my family, especially my daughter. This is something I promised myself I would finish. It feels amazing."
