MONTGOMERY CO., Va. (WDBJ7) A former Montgomery County Department of Social Services employee will serve more than two years in prison for embezzlement.

Pamela Basham, 43, of Christiansburg, previously pleaded guilty to six counts of embezzlement.

Basham embezzled more than $224,000 between 2005 and 2015. She was also ordered to re-pay the money to the county. Basham was ordered to serve two years and three months in prison.

Basham was the assistant director of the department. She bought several personal items including clothes, food, voice recorders, computer equipment, toys, shoes, cameras, cell phone cases, furniture, and vacuum cleaners. Basham used her Montgomery County credit card to purchase the items.

Basham said she was having financial difficulties after getting divorced in 2003, and was trying to support her adult son, his child, and her mother.
