DANVILLE, Va. (WDBJ7) Forty kids graduated from Danville's first Youth Police Academy Thursday.
The academy was three weeks long and kids went through boot camps, drunk driving simulations, and more to learn what it takes to become a police officer.
Earlier this year the department appointed a youth engagement officer to put on programs like this academy for kids.
"Time and time again I heard, 'We need more things for the kids to do,' We have to show folks that there is more things than just being out on the street, that Danville has so much to offer, that government agencies, that community agencies can come together and give kids something to do during the summer," says Danville Police Chief, Scott Booth.
The police department plans to hold more youth police academies in the future.
