Friends describe Amherst County shooting victim as humble family man

AMHERST CO., Va. (WDBJ7) A 41-year-old man was found dead Tuesday morning in in Amherst County.

Troy Roberson was a barber. Friends say Roberson cut hair at Duvall's Barber Shop.

Just outside the door of the business deputies found Roberson on the pavement with a gunshot wound.

For most of the morning Tuesday, yellow tape and sheriff's deputies surrounded a small shopping center at the corner of Maple Drive and Old Wright Shop Road.

"To wake up this morning and see this, it's shocking,” said Kim Brinkley, a friend of Roberson.

Brinkley lives and works across the street from the crime scene, where deputies found Roberson shot to death around 3 a.m. Tuesday.
"Troy was like a son to me. He was quiet, humble. He didn't bother anybody,” Brinkley said.

Deputies tell WDBJ7 they aren't sure who shot Roberson or what motivated the killing.

"You can see some casings laying on the ground, so we know it was definitely a gunshot, but as far as why this happened we don't know,” Amherst County Sheriff E.W. Viar said.

Loved ones gathered and cried Tuesday near the spot where Roberson died.

"He loved his children, he loved his family, and he would help anybody,” Brinkley said. “For anybody that knew him, he is going to be missed. He was a good guy."

Roberson was 41 years old and friends here say he had a birthday coming up a week from Sunday.

The sheriff says he needs the public's help to figure out what happened here.

Anyone with information should call the Amherst County's Sheriff's Office.
