GALAX, Va. (WDBJ7) When tones sound at the Galax Fire Department it means someone needs help.
This time was different. This time firefighters wanted to make a young man's birthday extra special by naming him firefighter for the day.
"Best day ever!" said Tyson Ford.
Tyson Ford is a huge fan of the fire department. So on his birthday he got the call of a lifetime.
"We had no idea it was going to be to this magnitude," said Steven Ford, Tyson's father and a personal trainer for the department's firefighters.
His family helped him suit up and respond to a fire at a training facility.
"We knew it was going to be a big day for Tyson. I didn't want him to be able to forget about it," said Brady White with the Galax Fire Department.
Tyson was in charge. He crawled through fake smoke, held a fire hose, and put out a fire.
"It was amazing. That's what our dream has been the whole time just to let him do anything that he wanted to do maybe in a different way but for him to get to live out his dreams," said Kyla Ford, Tyson's mother.
The whole experience was posted on Facebook and by Tuesday afternoon the video had received more than 245 thousand views and dozens of comments.
"Everybody is saying yeah Galax Fire Department you did great, no it's the other way around. Tyson blesses us. Every time we see him he's chipper, he makes our day, he makes us happy," said Captain Mike Ayers with the fire department.
It was an moment that still brings a big smile to Tyson's face. And he's ready for it to happen again.
"Maybe soon part 2 engine one," Tyson said.
"He wants a part 2. We'll use engine one for part two," his mother said with a laugh.
