Gas prices rise ahead of Memorial Day weekend

Ahead of Memorial Day weekend, gas prices are on their way up in our area.

According to GasBuddy.com, gas prices have risen about five cents per gallon in the past week.

The average in Roanoke is $2.10 a gallon. That's still better than the national average, which jumped over six cents a gallon to $2.28. The state average is $2.11 per gallon.

Industry analyst Trilby Lundberg said Sunday that the hike is mostly due to a continuing increase in crude oil prices. The price at the pump has risen 55 cents since late February.

A petroleum analyst says even with the recent increases at the pump, on average nationally, we're still paying about 45 cents less a gallon this year, compared to last year.

In the Lower 48, the highest average price of regular gasoline was $2.85 per gallon in San Francisco. The lowest was $1.98 in Tucson, Arizona.

The U.S. average diesel price is $2.32 per gallon, up 4 cents from two weeks ago.
