General Motors announces job cuts

(CNN) General Motors plans to cut jobs.

The automaker did not say how many jobs its cutting, but said roughly half of the nearly 600 workers at its Warren transmission plant would get pink slips.

The Michigan factory makes transmissions used in several GM cars and the electric drive units for the Chevrolet Volt.

A statement from the company says the layoffs are due to reductions in passenger car production, and that consumers are buying more trucks or SUV's instead.
