RADFORD, Va. (WDBJ7) It's time now for a trip to Radford and Norm Lineburg Field for our Subway Spotlight Game of the Week.
Last year Radford blew out George Wythe in the season opener, but the Maroons returned the favor with a dramatic playoff win.
This rivalry dates back to the days of the old New River Valley District.
And there were plenty of fans on hand for the Week One rivalry game between George Wythe and Radford. The two teams handed it to each other last year, but this go-around, it was all Maroons from the opening kick.
GW scored early and often, beginning with a 58-yard touchdown run by Kane Owens.
Radford was looking for the response. Elijah Duncan was looking to throw, but Dylan Anderson deflected the pass, and Landon Thompson caught it out of the air and took it back to the house, giving Wythe a 14-nothing lead.
The Bobcats tried to make a stand before it got too far away from them. Dale Stanley and Adam Simpkims combined for the sack.
But it wouldn't matter. The Maroons continued to stack it on in the second quarter. Walker Nowers took the direct snap, and took it ten yards into the end zone. That made it 30-zip.
Then before the half it's Owens again, taking it to the outside and in from 24 yards out. George Wythe went into half up 37-nothing, and complete the shutout over Radford, 56-0.
"We were the more physical team, I feel like we just played, and we don't have any "I' players, I mean, it's all about the team,” George Wythe senior linebacker Ben Bishop said.
George Wythe coach Brandon Harner said: "A lot of these kids are back offensively from the heartache of the loss in the state semifinals, and they don't want to taste that again. But the group we have right now, they're awesome."
With only a few returning starters from last season, Radford just couldn't hide from their inexperience, while George Wythe's dominating victory has them rolling into week two, already showing signs of being one of the top 1A teams in the state, once again.
