SWEET BRIAR, Va (WDBJ7) A 5K race at Sweet Briar College challenged women and girls to reach for their goals.
The "fun run" kicked off on Sunday, and is an annual tradition for the "Girls on the Run" program.
The program teaches girls life skills and problem solving, all while preparing them for the big race at the end.
Organizers said they've seen Girls on the Run grow steadily since it took off 10 years ago.
They even have to host a second race in Charlottesville just to accomodate the number of people taking part.
Organizers said the turnout is no surprise given the impact the program has.
"When we first saw this program with our own daughters ten years ago we knew we had to take it out to girls everywhere," Mary Hansen said. "It has the girls, teaches them to become self-aware, to learn what's really important in their lives. More about their inner beauty vs their outer beauty. To be confident in who they are."
So far Girls on the Run has reached more than a million young women.
They hope to raise that number to 2-million by 20-20.
