ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ7) They've already met in their first debate.
Republican Ed Gillespie and Democrat Ralph Northam are taking their campaigns to audiences across the state.
And now both are battling on the air.
Gillespie was first on television after the June primary.
This week, he added two new ads highlighting ethics reform and immigration enforcement.
And now Northam has followed with his first television ad of the general campaign, that focuses on his experience as a pediatrician, and his support for Medicaid expansion.
"And it is starting quite early," said Virgnia Tech Professor and WDBJ7 Political Analyst Bob Denton. "Normally the general campaign in full throttle starts at Labor Day, but now we're seeing at the summer season, both candidates are gearing up their campaign, which also gives us a hint that it's quite competitive."
