INDEPENDENCE, Va. (WDBJ7) New equipment will help Independence firefighters during emergencies.

The volunteer fire department now has 20 new air packs with digital oxygen sensors and lights warning other firefighters of low tanks. They are also bluetooth compatible.

Some are equipped with a thermal imaging camera that gives firefighters the ability to search through burning buildings quicker with lighter equipment.

"We run a lot of mutual aid calls. We can assist our mutual aid departments better with them, our community, our county as a whole I think is going to benefit from these new air packs," Captain Matthew Adams, Independence Volunteer Fire Department.

The current air packs are 15 years old. The fire department also received new masks.

A nearly 170 thousand dollar FEMA grant helped fund the new equipment.
