BOONES MILL, Va (WDBJ7) Trains are part of the rich history of many of southwest Virginia hometowns. In Boones Mill, some people are making sure that history is preserved.
Leaders broke ground on the historic train depot.The town received a $76,000 grant from V-DOT to add lights and fix the grounds around the depot.
"Just to see it being completed and then enjoy the rewards of it being complete," said Michael Smith, Boones Mill Depot Restoration Committee. "Especially people coming from out of town and making it a destination for people to come to. Hopefully a lot of the younger people come here and enjoy it and see how it really was back in the day."
The town is working get more funds to finish the interior.They hope to have it open for visitors later this year.
