ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ7) Families will soon gather around a table filled with holiday favorites, like stuffing and turkey. Some people are not as fortunate, so groups in our area are preparing to give back.
Volunteers for the group UBU and Blue Ridge Towers prepare about 100 bags for families in need. "We want to be that system for people that may have just fallen on hard times during this season," said Antonio Hash, UBU Founder. UBU isn't the only group who's preparing to put a smile on people's faces this holiday.
The Rescue Mission is in the midst of sorting t-shirts and supplies for the 12th Annual Turkey Dash; which is a huge fundraiser for the organization's yearly food budget and holiday feasts. "So we really are moving our feet so others can eat," said Uneita Mathews, Rescue Mission.
Right after the race, the Rescue Mission will feed about 700 people on Thanksgiving. "I think we are all looking for ways to give back, we are all so blessed. Every time I see someone come through the door, bringing a pie, or serve a meal it means we are giving back. We are helping folks in crisis because it could be us," said Mathews.
"The community came together because they understand the need in our own city, families need the help. It makes my heart feel good that we can be a blessing to somebody this season," said Hash.
Both organizations are still collecting items if people are interested in donating.
