CHATHAM, Va. (WDBJ7) Virginia State Police are warning people about an Internal Revenue Service phone scam.

Callers told state police about IRS-impersonation calls linked to a Virginia State Police office in Chatham. The scammers have cloned the office’s main number, 434-432-7287, to help convince the caller that they are legitimate.

State police say the IRS will never call to demand money, a bill will be sent to you if you own any taxes. IRS employees will never threaten to contact police and have you arrested. They’ll also never demand you to pay or ask for credit card numbers over the phone.

The IRS says scams like this one have been making rounds throughout the country.

If you get an email from the IRS or a similar organization that you aren’t expecting, you can report it by emailing phishing@irs.gov.
