UPDATE: Deputies identify female inmate who died at Roanoke County-Salem Jail

Roanoke County officials have identified the inmate who was found unresponsive Thursday as Candace Devendorf, 31, of Roanoke.

Devendorf was being held with a $2,000 bond on charges out of Roanoke County General District Court. She was booked into the Roanoke County-Salem Jail on Tuesday, December 19 after being arrested, and arraigned the December 20 with no change in bond.

Preliminary autopsy results show no signs of trauma or injury, but the exact cause of death is pending results of toxicology report.

The investigation into Devendorf's death is being handled by Virginia State Police.


Virginia State Police are investigating the death of a female inmate at the Roanoke County‐Salem Jail.

A woman was found unresponsive in her third-floor cell early Thursday morning, according to a statement from Roanoke County Sheriff Eric Orange.

A deputy notified medical staff and lifesaving practices were immediately started, which included the use of an automated defibrillator according to the Sheriff's statement.

Paramedics arrived on scene moments later and pronounced the inmate dead at 2:05 a.m, the Sheriff's statement read.

The inmate was taken to a medical examiner’s office. Her name was not immediately made available by the sheriff's office.
