LewisGale welcomes community to the new stand-alone ER

ROANOKE Co., Va. (WDBJ7) Lewis Gale has a new emergency room and it is a new model in the region. The new facility opened it's doors for the public.

The emergency room is a place that most of people don't want to end up; however if people have to visit, Lewis Gale is hoping their new E-R cuts wait time. "Roanoke has a need for a third emergency department,: said Michael Henson of LewisGale Medical Center. "The two we have are very busy if anyone has ever been in one. The need was there, high traffic area, location is great."

The 10,000 square foot building is on corner of Electric and Ogden Rd. Several people attended the open house and say they are excited the doors are open. " Instead of the old empty building that's been here for years, we've got something that can actually serve the community, which is excellent," said Irinia Specht, Roanoke County resident.

Mary Atthowe, Rockbridge County Resident: "It's beautiful, it's wonderful, it's brand new and clean," said Mary Atthowe a Rockbridge County resident. "I guess we're going to start getting it dirty on Tuesday right? "

The facility is open 24/7 and has unique features like private treatment rooms, x-ray rooms, laboratory testing rooms, and can even a maternity room."They have so much equipment and lab , everything available, that is going to be here twenty four hours a day," said Atthowe.

If a patient requires more service an ambulance is available around the clock to take them up the road to the main hospital. "Emergency medicine has to be done quick, it's in the name, so I want to get people in front of doctors faster, so that's what I hope we accomplish," said Henson.

The new facility will open official December 5, 2017.
