LEXINGTON, Va. (WDBJ7) A nearly half million dollar grant from FEMA is allowing the city to hire more firefighters.

The money will help them pay for the salaries and benefits of four new firefighters for a two year period.

Officials said there has been a growing call volume and demand for services over the years and this allows them to serve the community better.

"This makes me really really excited," said Chief Ty Dickerson. "This is much needed help in a dangerous business where we're trying to do our very best to help citizens in their time of need and we want to be as well prepared as we can."

Chief Dickerson said they plan to start the hiring process as soon as possible.
