LEXINGTON, Va. (WDBJ7) Lexington and Buena Vista were among 21 Virginia localities to mark 2016 with no traffic fatalities.

"We will continue to be proactive in this, in our enforcement, in our patrols, in our daily work to keep this statistic up," says Capt. Mark Riley, acting chief of the Lexington Police Department."But you have to be ever vigilant, you always have to be working toward this. But it is a great thing. It is fantastic to be one of these jurisdictions."

The Department of Motor Vehicles says 761 people died in traffic crashes last year.

Other cities in the area without traffic deaths include Bristol, Covington, Galax, Martins, Radford and Salem, as well as Nelson County.
