Lexington restaurant competes in TV donut showdown

LEXINGTON, Va. (WDBJ7) It’s the first thing on their sign, so it shouldn’t have been a big surprise when the folks at Pure Eats got a call out of the blue.

“I thought it was a joke, you know," says Kasey Potter, the General Manager. "Someone was playing a prank or something.”

Owner John Blackburn thought “It was a fantastic surprise.”

The call was about their donuts. Or rather, how they make them. Or rather, if they would make them on TV, on something called “Donut Showdown.”

“They were interested in Pure Eats donuts and having us compete,” says Blackburn.

And in a TV kitchen much roomier than the tiny one in back of Pure Eats, they competed over who could make the best donuts. With one big handicap …

“We have a donut robot," Potter explains. "And there we had to use our own. We had to use this hand press machine.”

Well, that and the fact that Blackburn, as Pure Eats’ owner, hasn’t made donuts in a while.

“In the first years we were open, from 2011 into 2012, I made the donuts almost every day,” he says. But not many since.

But apparently that didn’t hurt them.

“We can’t say who won," says Blackburn, explaining there's a very strict nondisclosure agreement with the show. "But we were pleased with our performance there.”

“I think Lexington will be proud of us," says Potter. "And all the other donut places. So I think we did alright.”

But that’s all we could learn.

“I can’t talk about it," Potter says when pressed. "But you’ll find out soon enough.”

"Donut Showdown" is on the Cooking Channel Tuesday, Jan. 3, at 10 p.m.
